There are no DSLRs you can buy new for $400. You can buy a used DSLR for under $400, though. I own a used Nikon D70 with a AF Nikkor 35-70mm lens. Works great. I bought a new lens for it and it works amazingly.

What kind of photography camera is good for a beginner? I’m a beginner. I’ve used and fiddled with an SLR camera before, and I do know a thing or two about photography, but I’d rather start with a more simple camera for my own. I do have a price limit; about $400. I would like to get a Nikon or Canon since I know those are the preferred cameras for beginners. Any other information would be super useful. Thanks!

If depends on how much you are willing to spend. For an entry level DSLR I would recommend the Rebel XTI or Nikon D40. Also I would invest in a better quality lens than the stock one. Try to get one with a wide aperture and image stabilization if you can afford it. Think of what subjects you like to photograph when considering what lens to buy. I always keep a wide angle lens, a 50mm fixed lens and a 70-200 f2.8L in my bag. These will allow you great flexibility but they are expensive.

I have Nikon D50 and you can buy a flash SB-600 for additional lighting. It’s great and you can see the pictures instantly on your lcd screen. also it has a quick recovery time so that you can shoot outdoor photos continuasly like a regular film camera, unlike the cheaper ones that you have to wait for it to reload. Good luck finding a camera!

If you are serious about photography and plan on going pro someday then get a DSLR. Most photography schools require that you have a DSLR. We use the Canon Rebel XTi at the Art Institute. It’s a great camera and the price has dropped a lot since the newer version (the XSi) will be coming out soon. I’ve had mine for about 2 years now, and I still absolutely love it. Best of luck!

If your really keen on photography then it has to be a DSLR, any brand, just get the best deal you can. Some of the more popular brands are a bit of a rip off, cashing in on their own expensive publicity, that you pay for. That’s what we all ended up using eventually, might as well save some money in the long run and go for it now. As your experience/knowledge grows you will ‘grow into’ what a DSLR can do. (Which is pretty much anything you want it to) Chris
